California Drivers Education

Getting your driver’s license is one of the most significant events of your teenage years. The California DMV requires all teenagers under the age of 18 to hold a learner’s permit for 6 months before applying for their driver’s license. In order to obtain your learner’s permit, you must first complete a California drivers education course. You can take your driver’s education course when you are young as 15 years old, and you can apply for your permit when you are anywhere between the ages of 15½ and 18.

After completing your California drivers ed course with National Driver Safety Services and passing your permit exam, you are eligible for behind-the-wheel training. This is a very important component to a California drivers education course. Teens gain real life experience on the road with the assistance of a parent and/or instructor.

All minors under the age of 17½ must complete driver’s training before applying for their driver’s license. The DMV requires teens to complete at least 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a professional instructor. Driver training may be completed at a public high school, private high school, or state licensed professional driving school. Teens must also complete 50 hours of drive time practice (10 of which must be at night) with an adult ages 25 or older.
