- Things To Know About Getting Your California Learner's Permit.
- In order to obtain a provisional permit in the state of California you must:
- Be at least 15 ½, but under 18 years of age
- Have completed a 30-hour (or 2½ semester) driver’s education course
- Enroll in, or already be enrolled in a six-hour Behind-the-Wheel driver's training course
- Once you've passed your driver's ed course, you will need to go to the DMV, where you will:

- Pay a $25 fee
- Give your thumb print
- Have your picture taken
- Pass a written traffic laws and sign test as well as a vision exam
- In order to take the written and vision exams at the DMV, you must present your social security number and proof of your birth date and legal citizenship. Some acceptable forms of identification include:
- U.S. Birth Certificate
- Proof of Indian Blood Degree
- U.S. Passport
- U.S. Armed Forces ID Card
- Certificate of Naturalization
- Permanent Resident Card
- A foreign passport or Mexican Border Crossing Card with a valid I-94
- Passing Your Written Test

- You must answer at least 39 out of the 46 questions correctly on the written traffic laws and
signs test in order to pass
- You have three chances to pass the written test
- Once you have your California Learner Permit, you will first need complete your Behind-the-Wheel
training, then you will need drive 50 hours (10 of which need to be at night) with a parent or
guardian. Once you have your permit for six months, you can apply to get your driver's license
