California Learner's Permit
In order to obtain a provisional permit in the state of California you must:
- Be at least 15 ½, but under 18 years of age
- Have completed a 30-hour (or 2½ semester)
driver’s education course
- The driver’s education course does not need to be completed when you apply for your permit if you are enrolled in an integrated driver’s education/driver’s training course.
- If you are over the age of 17½ you do not need to take driver’s education or driver’s training in order to apply for your permit.
- Be enrolled in or have completed a driver’s training course
- Pay a $25 fee
- Give your thumb print
- Have your picture taken
- Pass a written traffic laws and sign test as well as a vision exam
- In order to take the written and vision exams, you must present your social security number and proof of your birth date and legal citizenship.
- You must answer at least 39 out of the 46 questions correctly on the written traffic laws and signs test in order to pass.
- You have three chances to pass the written test.
- If you are under the age of 18, you must hold your provisional permit for 6 months before applying for your driver’s license. Permit holders may only drive when there is an adult age 25 or older in the vehicle.
