Tips to a Beneficial Driver's Ed
Teaching your teen to be a safe driver starts before they ever get in the car. Some things that need to be discussed before the keys are in your teen’s hands include:
- The importance of being a safe driver
- Safety risks (alcohol, drugs, dangerous driving)
- Driving is a privilege, not a right
Once the importance of safe driving has been discussed, it’s time to hand over the keys and take a ride with your teen behind the wheel. Here is a quick checklist of things to remember:
- Determine where you will practice safe driving
- Plan the exact route your teen will take to get there
- Breathe. It’s important to not get excited or angry when your teen makes mistakes
- Pay attention to everything and give plenty of warning with driving directions.
- Talk. Ask how your teen feels as they drive.
- Give praise and watch stress levels of you and your teen
- When it’s over, let your teen tell you how they felt about it first
- Constructively inform your teen of things they need to work on
- Praise everything they did well!
