California Parent Taught Drivers Ed

As a parent, what you teach them today could save them tomorrow.

Your teen is about to take on the biggest responsibility & privilege that comes with
becoming a mature adult: Driving.
It's an exciting time, but it can also be nerve-wracking for you, the parent.

That's why we don't take California Driver's Ed lightly.

Free Parent-Teen Contract

“I swear I thought you said my curfew was 10:30!” You’ve probably heard that from your teen a few times already. And now that he or she is about to get their permit, there’s a good chance that more and more of these kinds of instances are going to occur.

That’s why we’ve created the NDSS Parent-Teen Contract. With it, you can clarify every one of your rules and requirements for your teen as they embark on the open road, from setting curfew times to who they are allowed to have with them in the car.

Tips to a Beneficial Driver's Ed

Teaching your teen to be a safe driver starts before they ever get in the car. Some things that need to be discussed before the keys are in your teen’s hands include:

  • The importance of being a safe driver
  • Safety risks (alcohol, drugs, dangerous driving)
  • Driving is a privilege, not a right

Once the importance of safe driving has been discussed, it’s time to hand over the keys and take a ride with your teen behind the wheel. Here is a quick checklist of things to remember:

  • Determine where you will practice safe driving
  • Plan the exact route your teen will take to get there
  • Breathe. It’s important to not get excited or angry when your teen makes mistakes
  • Pay attention to everything and give plenty of warning with driving directions.
  • Talk. Ask how your teen feels as they drive.
  • Give praise and watch stress levels of you and your teen
  • When it’s over, let your teen tell you how they felt about it first
  • Constructively inform your teen of things they need to work on
  • Praise everything they did well!
  • Repeat
