What are the minimum software requirements for your courses?

The course works with any standard browser like IE or Netscape. There is no requirement of any software installation.

Does your online Drivers Education Course satisfy DMV requirements?

Yes. Our online course meets all the state and DMV requirements needed to obtain your California Learner's Permit.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

What are the system requirements for taking the course online?

The course was developed so that any system with internet access can display the online course. If you are having difficulties displaying the course, contact our customer support group at 1-800-990-2813.

I use AOL and I keep getting knocked offline. What should I do?

If you are using AOL as your Internet service provider, you will have activity requirements while online. During some of the longer sections requiring more minutes online, there is a chance AOL will knock you offline unless you remain interactive with AOL. Do not leave the screen alone for any great length of time.

Can I do this program if I have WebTV?

Yes. Many students have successfully taken this course using WebTV.

GETTING STARTED

How do I apply for a permit?

To apply for a permit, you must:

  • Be between the ages of 15½ and 18.
  • Fill in the application form DL 44 that you must get from the DMV. An original DL 44 form must be submitted. Copies obtained by Xeroxing, faxing, or other methods will not be accepted. (For more information, see Forms You'll Need.)
  • Get the signatures of your parents' or guardians' on the application form DL 44.
  • Go to the DMV office (make an appointment for faster service) to apply for your permit.
  • If you've recently completed our online Drivers Ed, be sure to take our Certificate of Completion form with you.
  • Have your thumb print taken.
  • Have your photograph taken.
  • Provide your social security number for verification with the Social Security Administration.
  • Provide documents that confirm your birth date and legal citizen status (For more details, go to Forms You'll Need).
  • Submit all the proper forms stating you passed driver education and are enrolled in driver training. (That's our Certificate of Completion form.)
  • Pay the application fee. (This fee entitles you to three exams of any type within a year's time and this includes both the instruction permit and the driver license.)
  • Pass a vision exam. (A 20/40 visual acuity with or without glasses is the department's vision guideline.)
  • Pass a test on traffic laws and signs. The test is comprised of 46 questions and you need to clear at least 39 to get a passing grade. Three chances are given to pass the test. If you fail, you must wait seven days to retake it. (Also, to allow you sufficient time for testing, the DMV will not administer any written or audio exams after 4:30 p.m.)
Do I need my parent/guardians consent to get a permit?

If you are under 18 years of age you do. All minors must have their parent(s)' or guardian(s)' signatures on the application form DL 44.

Do I have to make an appointment to get my permit?

Although an appointment is not required for a written exam, for faster service, it is highly recommended. To make an appointment please visit the CA DMV Website.
How much will my permit cost?

As the price changes from time to time, you'll need to check with the DMV for the exact price. Please remember - this fee entitles you to three exams of any type within a year's time including both the instruction permit and the driver license. If all the requirements are not met within the 12-month period, the application is void and all steps must be re-completed

OTHER PERMIT QUESTIONS

Can a learner's permit be renewed?

If your application expires before you have held your provisional instruction permit for six months, you must return to the DMV and re-start the process with a new application. You are required to repay the application fee and fulfill all requirements. Take your instruction permit with you to the DMV to gain credit for the time you have held your instruction permit and receive cumulative credit towards your subsequent provisional instruction permit to meet the six-month requirement before taking your driving test.

How long do I have to have my learner's permit before I can get my license?

You must have held it for a minimum of 6 months time to be eligible for a license.

How can I replace a lost or stolen permit, and how much will it cost?

You need to pay a fee to a DMV office in order to replace a lost or stolen permit/license. Please check with the DMV for the exact costs of the fee.

GETTING YOUR LICENSE

What are the prerequisites for getting my driver's license?

To apply for a driver's license, you must have:

  • Had a learner's permit for at least 6 months
  • Passed Behind-The-Wheel Instructions
  • Driven the required 50 hours (10 at night)
  • Passed the DMV road test
Do I need my parent/guardian's consent to get a license?

If you are under 18 years of age you need your parents' or guardians' signatures on the application form DL 44.

How do I apply for a driver license IF I AM UNDER 18?

To move from driver's PERMIT to driver's LICENSE you must:

How Can I Pay for the Course?

We accept the following forms of payment:

  • Be 16 years old.
  • Have held your permit for a minimum of six months.
  • Have completed driver education.
  • Have completed 6 hours of professional driver training.
  • Have completed 50 hours of practice with an adult 25 years or older. The adult must have a valid California driver license and certify to the 50 hours of practice. At least 10 of the 50 hours must have been done at night.

To take your driving test, you will need to:

  • Make an appointment. We HIGHLY recommend you make an appointment. (Driving tests are not given without an appointment. For more information, Click Here or call 1-800-777-0133 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, to make a driving test appointment.
  • You must also show that your vehicle is properly insured before the driving test begins (or it will be postponed) by providing one of the following:
    • A document with the liability insurance policy or surety bond number.
    • An Assigned Risk insurance card with the name of the assigned insurance company, file number, and current coverage dates.
    • Current insurance binder or copy of an insurance policy signed or countersigned by an insurance company representative.
    • Rental car contract if the driver is listed on the contract as the insured.
    • DMV-issued certificate of self-insurance or acknowledgment of cash deposit.
    • Written confirmation from the insurer that the person is insured.

After you pass your driving test you will be issued an interim license valid for 60 days until you receive your new photo license in the mail. Check your address before you leave the DMV and tell the DMV representative if you have moved or if your address is incorrect. If you have not received your license after 60 days, call 1-800-777-0133 to check on the status. Have your interim license with you to provide information when requested.

If you fail your driving test, you must wait two weeks before you can take the test again. You have three chances to pass.

If driver education and driver training were taken in a state other than California, the DMV will accept either a form DL 33 completed by the out-of state school, or a letter on the out-of state school's stationery signed by a school official stating that the courses are equivalent to California's requirements. Instructional permits issued by another state are not acceptable proof.

How do I apply for a driver license - IF I AM OVER 18?

To apply for a driver license if you are over 18, you will need to do the following:

  • Visit a DMV office. (Make an appointment for faster service by going to the DMV Online Appointment page.)
  • Complete application form DL 44. (An original DL 44 form must be submitted. Copies will not be accepted.)
  • Give a thumb print.
  • Have your picture taken.
  • Provide your social security number. It will be verified with the Social Security Administration while you are in the office.
  • Documents that verify your birth date, legal name and US Citizenship or legal status. If your current name no longer matches the name on your birth data/legal presence document,
  • Pay the application fee of $28. (This fee is waived if you have previously paid the fee in order to get your permit.)

  • Pass a test on traffic laws and signs. The test is comprised of 46 questions and you need to clear at least 39 to get a passing grade. Three chances are given to pass the test. Does my parent/guardian have control over my driving status until I am 18?

Since your parent/guardian is financially responsible for you until your 18th birthday, he/she has a right to have your license taken away.

How do I make a payment?

You may make your payment online by using a credit card, bank debit card with a Visa/MasterCard logo, or a personal check through our secure server. Is it safe to use my credit card online?

Yes. We use only the latest security technology to protect your Internet transactions. To ensure your privacy, your credit card number is never kept on file, and we promise to never share your information with anyone else.

How do I know if you have received my payment?

Once your payment is received you will be sent a payment verification by email. You may also call and check on the status of your payment by calling our customer service center at 1-800-990-2813.

What is your cancellation/refund policy?

You will receive a full refund if, prior to attempting the final exam, you cancel the enrollment contract within 30 business days of registering including Saturdays, Sundays, or holidays. Refunds are issued within 30 days of the effective date of termination. If you have not successfully completed the course within 270 days, your registration will be cancelled automatically and you will not be eligible for a refund.

Is it possible to lose your license? How?

Yes. If you have been cited for a DUI infraction, and/or have a major accident/traffic violation, your license may be revoked or taken way

Is there a "Zero Tolerance" rule (absolutely no alcohol) for teens?

If you are under 21 years of age:

  • It is illegal to purchase beer, wine, or hard liquor.
  • It is against law to carry an alcoholic beverage in your car unless your parent accompanies you.
  • If you are convicted of DUI, the court can seize your vehicle for up to six months. You will have to pay a storage fee to retain it.
  • If convicted of a first DUI, you may have to spend time in jail and pay a fine. The DMV must revoke your driver license for one year or until you are 18, whichever is longer. You must show proof of insurance, proof of completion for the educational component of a licensed DUI program, and pay a DMV reissue fee.
